What are some common signs your account could be compromised?
- Friends are reporting you are sending them emails from your address that you know you did not send
- Forwarding rules have been set and emails sent to you are being sent to another party
- Friends are reporting when emailing you they are getting replies from another email address OR they getting delivery reports which contain a different email address
- You receive a 'blocked due to abuse' error
How can accounts be compromised?
Scammers unfortunately have a number of different ways they could gain unauthorised access to an account. Most commonly, this occurs when you have:
- Accidentally entered your email address and password into a malicious website
- Opened a malicious file or clicked a link in a spam or phishing email
- Used a weak password that someone or a machine could easily guess
- Used the same password on multiple websites and one of those sites has been compromised
- Received a call from someone who has pretended to be an organisation you trust and you accidentally provided them personal information
Recommended actions to secure your email account
1. Reset your password

2. Review email rules and forwarding

- Run a virus and malware scan
